The Story

A one-person journey through family, memory and the search for meaning. With humour, honesty and raw vulnerability, Sean Casey LeClaire weaves together childhood stories, brushes with trouble, travels across the world and encounters with poetry and the people who shaped him.

LEELA is not about success.

The show is about living a radiant and true life—a journey into aliveness itself.

Something few people do, nowadays.

We are menaced on all sides with ruin, and the rot of superficiality.

More and more people are imprisoning themselves.

What we cherish gets lost in the secrecy of our souls.

Moral chaos takes control, a false power and fury animate our very existence.

LEELA is a word from our most ancient language, Sanskrit. It means divine play.

This play, the experience of watching and listening to the main character’s life

unfold—moment-to-moment—has been called a “fierce pilgrimage onstage,”

“a holy experience,” yet the grit of the narrative blends sacred and mundane;

the blessed and the brutal.

LEELA elegantly confronts the audience with a question, “are humans really necessary?”

Are we really?

We are asked to touch our better selves.

Something, I have been doing in my own life. Leaning toward the light.

Facing dark gifts given, moments of deep tenderness in spontaneous encounters

with people. The whole world is full of magical moments patiently waiting for our senses

to open, grow sharper. This play sharpens our senses.

I chose to write LEELA to fully step into the light, to deepen my understanding of the true heart.

To be honest, naked, unadorned in life, and on stage. It takes a certain bravery, as there are no pillars

in this play to lean on, no decoration, and because of that, a cleansing of the spirit

for all who long for such, happens. It is my gift, and service as an artist.

I began writing LEELA in July of 2019, during a Patsy Rodenberg workshop in NYC.

Hearing Shakespeare sonnet 94 spoken in the workshop, the opening line, “they that have power to hurt and will do none.”

Something opened in me, at a deeper dimension than I had ever touched with my awareness.

Many people want power, few possess it, and even fewer who have power, know how to use it wisely. I had misused power in the past, there was such sadness about that.

I began to more fully explore the difference between force and power.

How one, (power) invites, opens, and expands, elevates any given situation, power flows.

How the other (force) always contracts, diminishes, closes off, force comes from fixed minds.
